5 Ways to Naturally Whiten Teeth

Author: Natasha Gilani
Teeth whitening technology has come a long way since its inception. Not only have methods improved in effectiveness and results, but the low cost of treatments put celebrity white teeth in the reach of every person aspiring for the picture perfect smile. However, a majority of people believes that the bleach-based treatments typically used for teeth whitening are unnatural and can have significant side effects in the long run.

What most people do not realize is that teeth can be whitened using completely natural and readily available methods . A few are described below:

Option 1 – Abrasive Toothpastes
The first option is abrasive based toothpastes or teeth gel. These toothpastes contain fine abrasive material in the form of silica and various carbonates that help polish teeth as you are brushing them to clean off grime and dirt that is deposited everyday to make teeth dull.

Option 2 – Malic Acid
The next natural remedy is to find sources of malic acid, which is a natural astringent and cleaning agent. Malic acid is commonly found in strawberries and in smaller quantities in apples. You could use crush one ripe strawberry and half a spoon of baking soda to make a solution that you can apply on your teeth for about ten minutes and then rinse off and brush your teeth to remove the mixture. This method can be safely used once per week to achieve desired results. A higher frequency can actually lead to damaging the enamel layer on your teeth.

Option 3- Oranges and Lemons
Other natural astringent based solutions can be found in the use of orange peels and lemon juice. Orange peels can be used simply be running the inside white part of the orange peel onto your teeth for a refreshing buff. Alternatively, you could use a solution of lemon juice and salt, or lemon juice and a pinch of baking soda to brush your teeth with a natural bleaching agent. As with any bleaching solution, this method should be used once a week at the most.

Option 4 – Hard Wood Ash
Another effective and age-old remedy for whitening teeth is the use of hard wood ash. The naturally occurring potassium hydrochloride in hard wood ash helps remove stains from teeth in a natural way. You can simply use a toothbrush to apply the hard wood ash to your teeth and then brush it around your teeth to achieve the effect.

Option 5 – Go Natural
Some natural foods and fruits that act as natural cleansers for your teeth include crunchy vegetables and high fiber foods that help polish your teeth as you chew them. Similarly, leafy green vegetables such as spinach help promote a natural protective film on your teeth that protects the enamel from eroding and dulling your teeth.

While natural methods have been proven to work in whitening your teeth, most solutions presented above will take time to take effect and achieve desired results. These solutions also do not preclude the regular visits to dentists to ensure that you teeth are healthy. We encourage you to ask your dentist about additional teeth whitening options on your next visit.
